If you want to use someone else’s IP – whether a patent, trade mark, design, music rights or whatever – then you need a “licence” from them. The IP owner (licensor) typically charges money to the person they grant the licence to (licensee), which may be a royalty that depends on the amount of use – sales, for instance, or profits made.
