An “attorney” is someone qualified to advise on legal matters and protect their clients’ legal interests. In IP, we mostly use the term for patent and trade mark attorneys, who undergo specialist legal training in the fields they work in but aren’t qualified solicitors. Other types of lawyer that work in IP include solicitors and barristers (who study general law and then later specialise in IP) and paralegals.
