A “chartered” professional – such as a chartered patent or trade mark attorney – is someone who belongs to an organisation that protects the professionalism of their industry. It’s a sign that they’re properly qualified and that they keep their skills and knowledge up to date. Most IP professionals are also “regulated”, by a body such as the IP Regulation Board, the Solicitors Regulation Authority or the Bar Standards Board, to ensure they work to high ethical and professional standards.
