We are excited to launch the 2023 “Summer of IP”, a series of events and work experience opportunities to inform people about pursuing a career in IP (intellectual property). Whether you have never heard of IP, or have some curiosity about what a career in IP could look like, this campaign is open to all!

What is Summer of IP?
Summer of IP is an initiative created by Careers in Ideas to raise awareness about the various careers in IP and to attract a more diverse range of people into IP professions.
When does it launch?
Summer of IP will launch on 3 July 2023, and will run throughout the summer period.
What opportunities are available?
There are two main elements:
- Firstly, we are offering numerous exciting opportunities in which IP sector employers provide hands-on activities such as taster days and work experience opportunities. These will be taking place around the country, including in Birmingham, Cambridge, Liverpool and Manchester. Some of them have application deadlines coming up soon, so you will need to move quickly to secure your place!

- Secondly, we will be putting on a series of general talks organised by Careers in Ideas to provide an introduction to IP and the different careers available here. We also have more specific talks such as “Routes to legal qualification for IP solicitors and barristers”, “Applying to train as a patent or trade mark attorney” and “Working as an in-house IP professional”. There is a link to a summary of these talks below. Some of them will be pre-recorded and some will be live with a recording made available afterwards.

Who is it for?
Everyone is welcome! Whether you are a school or university student who has never heard of IP before, or a career changer looking to pivot into the IP world, Summer of IP has events for you.
Why should I get involved?
First, our events and opportunities are free and open to all levels; they don’t require any previous IP knowledge or qualifications. We have events around the country, including in Birmingham, Cambridge, Liverpool and Manchester. Many are also online, so completely flexible and accessible to join.
This is a unique opportunity to find out what a career in IP could look like, with the chance to learn from and network with top IP professionals and companies who are keen to recruit people like you!
