I studied Biochemistry at Bristol University so was first introduced to the world of IP from a patent perspective. After I graduated, I began a Masters degree in IP law which included a module on trade mark law. The diversity of commercial sectors and sometimes more tangible concepts caught my attention, so I jumped ship! I started a trade mark attorney training position after I graduated and moved to Gill Jennings & Every in 2012.
I work in a team of trade mark attorneys, supported by paralegals, to provide strategic brand protection advice – from initial selection of a trade mark through clearance searches to filing, prosecution and enforcement. The team is a small one which means I have been involved with a wide variety of types of work with different clients from the very beginning. I enjoy working with entrepreneurs and start-ups who are at the beginning of their branding journey, supporting them as their business grows and expands to other countries. There is a lot of satisfaction in seeing a new product in the supermarket that you have helped on its journey.
The job is busy and deadline based, but I enjoy the continuous learning as case law and practice is constantly evolving. I enjoy the creativity that comes with overcoming challenges our clients face – no situation is ever quite the same.
Post-qualification, the job and role has adapted as my circumstances have changed. I was fortunate to work remotely for Gill Jennings & Every from New Zealand for 6 months pre-pandemic, and am now working part-time 3 days a week while I have a young family.
