My first degree was in Politics and International Relations. After this I studied the GDL at City University with initial plans to go to the Bar. Whilst I applied for pupillage, I got a job as a paralegal at a fintech company. I loved it and continued to work at technology companies (including Google and a cybersecurity company). All these companies have a heavy IP element to their legal affairs and with the introduction of the SQE system I was able to qualify as a solicitor based on my in-house experience.
After this I applied to be a Director of the Intellectual Property Awareness Network (IPAN) and was happily accepted. IPAN is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes understanding of the value and importance of IP protection for innovation and success. Earlier this year, I took a career break to complete my Masters in Intellectual Property Law at St Peter’s College, University of Oxford. My research focused on the history of copyright and generative Artificial Intelligence in the UK. I applied for my current role after this.
My current role is very flexible which I love. I can undertake a contract review in the morning, draft an IP assignment in the afternoon, and assist with a trade mark litigation the next day. My current company has an in-house litigation department, and I am very excited that they have been kind enough to let me get involved in contentious IP matters. I enjoy the wide range of things an in-house Legal Counsel can get involved in.
I didn’t have a science background when I entered the field of IP law so don’t let that put you off! I have developed my own interests in the scientific fields. I am now a Lay Trustee for the Royal Microscopical Society. Being a trustee for such a historic organisation is also very enthralling work – the society was founded in 1839 making it the oldest organisation of its kind in the world! My day jobs and research interests have mostly revolved around technology, and this is an entirely new area of interest for me.
I am also Chair of the Board of Trustees for a charity which focuses on widening access to careers in technology through hosting workshops aimed at under-represented groups. I am passionate about encouraging other lawyers to become trustees and give back to charities! It is an amazing experience and shows how you can manage difficult conversations and take a leadership role.
My advice would be to say yes to everything in the early days because you never know what can happen and where your interests will develop! And take extensive notes!
