After finishing my undergraduate degree, I completed a “fast-track” journalism course where I studied media law, court reporting, public affairs and the traditional art of shorthand. This qualification allowed me to cut my teeth on a local newspaper where I reported on anything ranging from local council meetings and community events to Crown Court trials.
After a couple of years on the local paper, during which resources sadly became increasingly depleted, I joined World IP Review, a business-to-business publication covering IP law. At the time, my knowledge of IP was limited to having a vague awareness that the “super cheap Ray-Ban sunglasses” I had often seen sold in market-places during holidays were unlikely to be genuine. After a few months on the job, I quickly learned that IP was an enormously varied topic with a wealth of reporting potential. I spent three years at World IP Review before branching out into covering other legal disciplines for the Law Society Gazette. However, I soon found myself being drawn back into the world of IP. I joined Managing IP as a senior reporter in 2019, later becoming deputy editor and then editor in 2023.
I’m lucky to genuinely enjoy what I do. Every day is so varied, and I get to spend my time talking to leading lawyers, either in-house or in private practice, about the biggest IP developments. Journalism is fundamentally about being fed information and distilling it into a format that is digestible and easily understood. I believe IP is unique among legal disciplines in that it is all relatable. Everyone recognises the world’s major brands, or has marvelled at society’s most impressive inventions. Having the opportunity to write about the trends underlying those is a privilege.
