I was the first person to go to university from my extended family. I loved studying physics there, but was looking for something more flexible than an academic career. Someone I happened to sit next to at a lecture one day was applying to be a patent examiner, and encouraged me to think about a future in IP.
I wanted a career that ran as a thread through my life, rather than something I did separately or that solely defined me – the patent profession has been perfect for that. It is a busy, ever-changing career and very hard work too at times. But it’s allowed me flexibility in hours and working patterns to bring up a large family as a single parent, and be able to be involved in other ventures like charity work and running a vineyard – not just the patent “day-job”.
There are so many different career paths and routes possible today; I’ve been able to focus mainly on tech areas and roles I enjoy, as well as to be part of wider initiatives. Top for me has been supporting CPD (continuing professional development) through the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, and EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) networks with IP Inclusive.
