IP is the innovative face of the bar – we deal with the front face of technology, commerce, the creative arts, and civil procedure. No two days are the same, and no two clients are the same, which makes my working life extremely interesting! My cases range from technology patents to copyright in pop songs. I have worked with sole traders and multi-national companies, and everything in between.
I studied history and politics at university, having never heard of intellectual property, and it wasn’t until bar school where a tutor mentioned that I may like IP. She was right, and I love it! You don’t need science, but you do need to show you can deal with scientific concepts; for example, I learnt to code alongside my law conversion.
My colleagues are brilliant, and a key part of why I love this job – they are intelligent, funny, and trustworthy opponents. We fight hard but fair, which makes standing up against opponents in court far less terrifying, but also ensures I am constantly raising my game to bring my best for every case.
I love that the IP bar continues to diversify – we work hard to show that background is no barrier: if you are hard-working, determined, with a curious mind, you will fit right in!
