Free opportunities for STEM students

In this guest blog post, In2scienceUK describe the opportunities they provide to year 12 or S5/6 students, and to undergraduates and graduates, from low socioeconomic backgrounds and underrepresented groups, to help them to access and succeed in education and careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Who is In2scienceUK?

In2scienceUK is an award-winning national social mobility charity dedicated to helping thousands of young people from low socioeconomic backgrounds and underrepresented groups access and succeed in education and careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).The In2scienceUK logo

Our programmes offer young people free access to unique STEM experiences, such as bespoke in-person placements, interactive skills and employability workshops, inspiring away days, mentoring and ongoing alumni support.

In2STEM programme

In2STEM is a fantastic opportunity for year 12 or S5/6 students passionate about STEM. Delivered this summer, the programme offers a blend of online and in-person activities, equipping students with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to excel in STEM.

Applications for the free In2STEM programme are now open!

  • The programme is for year 12 or S5/6 students from low socioeconomic backgrounds interested in exploring a career in STEM.
  • The 2026 programme takes place between 20 July – 21 August 2026 and consists of work experience placements, online workshops, competitions and events.
  • The placements take place over 1 or 2 weeks during the programme period at a volunteer host’s STEM place of work.
  • Students are matched to a placement based on their subject interest, availability and location.

In2research is a one-year programme developed by In2scienceUK and UCL, designed to enhance access to postgraduate research degrees and career opportunities for people from low socioeconomic backgrounds and underrepresented groups.

If you are a second-year undergraduate or above at university or a STEM graduate, In2research lets you explore postgraduate research and gain experiences that pave the way to your academic and professional aspirations.

Over the course of an academic year, participants receive:

  • A full-time, voluntary eight-week research placement supported by a tax-free stipend equivalent to National Living Wage
  • Four online skills workshops delving deeply into key skills such as academic CV writing, communicating research, and preparing for interviews
  • Four mentoring sessions with a subject-specific mentor
  • Two inspiring away days to develop professional skills and practise networking skills

 

In2research has a strong focus on improving access to postgraduate research degrees and careers for people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. This year, we will be offering places in more locations than ever before, in a wide variety of STEM and STEM-related subjects!
